Byron Township

Byron Township is located in the north-east corner of Ogle County Illinois (North central Illinois) and bordered on the south by the Rock River.  We have a population of just over 6,000 with nearly half of them living in rural subdivisions outside of the City of Byron.

The Road District maintains 50 miles of roadways consisting of a few miles of gravel with most being hard surface roadways.  There is the elected Road District Commissioner, which is the only full time  elected position in Byron Township, with one full time employee and several part-time employees.  In the winter these part-time and one full-time employees have the dedication to come in to remove snow at 2:00am with a phone call placed at 1:40am!   We are very fortunate to have a great work force who brave the elements to make sure the buses are safe getting the kids to school and making sure the residents can get to work safely.

The township is governed by a 5 person Board of Trustees that meets monthly and are elected for four year terms.  One of the five trustees is elected as Supervisor for a four year term and their duties include presiding as the chairman at township meetings, handling the General Assistance cases and is the Ex Officio Treasurer of the Road District funds.  There is an elected Clerk and Assessor also elected for four year terms.
